MJF
Funds Grants at Record Levels

At its April board meeting, the Montana Justice Foundation (MJF)
board of directors awarded $754,023 in grants to legal aid providers
and access to justice initiatives from around the state, more money
than MJF has awarded in any previous year. Despite the record
funding level, the grant process was as competitive as ever.
Fourteen organizations submitted grant proposals; another new record
for the MJF, which has served as the charitable arm of the legal
community since 1979.

Grantee: Community Mediation Center – Ruby’s Story

The Community Mediation
Center (CMC), located in Bozeman, Montana, is committed to fostering
honest, respectful dialogue and collaborative problem solving. The
CMC has established the Low-Income Family Mediation Program. This
program assists many families to develop parenting plans for
children, usually ordered by the courts, which have in mind the best
interests of the children. One such recent case involved a young
woman named Ruby and her ex-husband Stephen. It had been a year
since the couple divorced and the parenting plan needed to be
revised. Ruby thought that she was ready to face Stephen, (though
she hadn’t seen him since the divorce), but when she walked into the
CMC office and heard Stephen’s voice in the next room, she began to
sob uncontrollably.
